What we put in...

So today i was at work talking with a co-worker about the book she was reading which was about this particular gang member from cerritos, ca turned straight and the life he once had and what he hopes his sons will never enter into. She says she might stop reading the book as it may become to graphic. I particularly don't like reading gory books but this one is based off real life events so the people aren't these fictitious characters who you wouldn't find yourself becoming attached to, their real people murdered. So she tells me that she has a problem absorbing the contents of these types of books, but upon recommendation will read until she is unable.
We begin to talk about what we put into our body as far as entertainment and the words we word and how it can begin to affect our thoughts. Mind your she prefaces our conversation with i'm not religious or a christian but I believe in a higher being. She goes onto to talk about how it's frightening to think of the kind of people who do write fiction that is comparable to the real life events in the book she's reading. She and i continue to talk about the fact that what you subject your thoughts to are definitely a contributing factor to what may come out.. now i'm not saying that if I love murder mysteries I have psychotic tendencies but I do think it's interesting that we are often willing to withstand so much material that is in essence evil.
What I found most interesting about this conversation was that she in her unbelieving state realized what we believers are often being ridiculed for.
What we as Christians strive to put into our bodies/or do are things that are profitable, worthy, honorable and what we trust because God says so will mirror Him who saved us.
What are we putting in?
The things we choose to read, to see, to be a part of, whatever it may be as little or as much we should... i should be aware of the motive within not only the material but my own heart as it is very susceptible to temptation and sin.
